** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Magic Reservoir in south-central Idaho shows pronounced seasonal changes in surface water temperature. In winter months (December–February) the surface typically sits near freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), and parts of the reservoir can ice over. Spring (March–May) brings cold, variable conditions as snowmelt and inflows keep temperatures in the roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) range. Peak warmth is usually reached in summer (June–August) when surface readings commonly climb to about 60–75°F (16–24°C) on warm, calm days, although cooler years or windy conditions can keep temperatures lower. In autumn (September–November) the surface cools again to roughly 45–60°F (7–16°C). Deeper water stays considerably colder year-round and local factors such as inflows, dam releases, wind, and shading can produce strong variation across the reservoir.
Recreational swimming is commonly practiced at Magic Reservoir during the warmer months, and there are no widespread prohibitions specific to casual bathing; however, swimmers should be mindful that cold water shock and rapid temperature drops with depth are real hazards. Boat traffic, submerged structures, sudden drop-offs, and fluctuating water levels from dam operations also affect safety. For safe swimming, enter gradually, wear a personal flotation device if venturing beyond shallow areas, and check current conditions with local land managers before planning extended water activity.
