** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Redfish Lake is a high-elevation, glacially fed lake in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, so its water tends to stay quite cool year-round. During spring and early summer, surface temperatures commonly range from about 35–55°F (2–13°C) as snowmelt chills the basin. The warmest period is typically in mid to late summer, when daytime heating can push surface readings into the neighborhood of 50–68°F (10–20°C) on sunny afternoons, but even then deeper water remains much colder. In fall the surface usually drops back to roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C), and in winter the lake can approach freezing and sometimes ice over, near 32°F (0°C) or below in sheltered areas.
Swimming at Redfish Lake is generally permitted and draws visitors in summer because of the scenic setting, but it is not like swimming in a warm recreational pool. The combination of cold water, variable weather and the absence of lifeguards at many access points means swimmers face risks of cold-water shock and rapid loss of body heat; short dips, wetsuits or careful monitoring of children are common precautions. Local campground and boat-launch areas may have designated spots for entering the water, but visitors are advised to check current conditions and use caution around boats and changing winds.
