Lyman Reservoir, which is the centerpiece of Lyman Lake State Park in eastern Arizona, sits at a relatively high elevation of nearly 6,000 feet. This elevation moderates the extreme desert heat, but the water still experiences a distinct seasonal temperature cycle. During the peak summer months, surface water temperatures generally become comfortable for water sports and swimming, often reaching an average of around 27∘C to 31∘C (80∘F to 88∘F). In the winter, the lake cools substantially, with temperatures likely dropping to the range of 4∘C to 11∘C (40∘F to 52∘F), making the water too cold for recreational swimming.
Swimming is generally permitted and encouraged at Lyman Lake, as it is managed by Arizona State Parks as an all-water-sports lake. The park specifically mentions swimming as a popular summer activity. Unlike some other Arizona lakes, Lyman has no size restrictions on boats, which means boat traffic, including water-skiers and powerboats, is common. The State Park explicitly states that there is no lifeguard on duty, meaning all swimming is at your own risk.
