Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Fools Hollow Lake, situated in the high-elevation cool country of the White Mountains near Show Low, Arizona, experiences a distinctly temperate water temperature cycle compared to desert lakes. Given its elevation of over 6,200 feet, the lake does not reach the scorching temperatures of the Sonoran Desert reservoirs. During the peak summer months of June and July, the surface water is at its warmest, typically reaching an average of around 27∘C (80∘F), which is comfortable for swimming. Conversely, the winter months see a significant drop, with temperatures cooling to the range of 2∘C to 11∘C (36∘F to 52∘F), making it far too cold for casual water recreation.
Swimming is generally permitted at Fool Hollow Lake, as the State Park encourages a variety of water activities, including boating and fishing, to allow visitors to enjoy the cool mountain environment. Visitors are allowed to swim from their boat or the shoreline. However, the Arizona State Parks department explicitly notes that there is no specific, designated swimming beach or area at the park. Consequently, all swimming is at your own risk, as there is no lifeguard on duty. Swimmers are cautioned against swimming near boat ramps, docks, or the dam and are advised to wear water shoes to protect their feet from the often-rocky shoreline.
