** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Whitney’s surface temperatures change substantially through the year because it is a reservoir in north-central Texas. In winter months the water commonly dips into the 40s–50s °F (4–13 °C), which feels quite cold for prolonged immersion. Spring sees a steady rise, often ranging from the mid‑50s to mid‑70s °F (13–24 °C) as air temperatures warm. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with typical surface readings in the mid‑70s to high‑80s °F (24–31 °C) and occasional pockets reaching the low‑90s °F (33–35 °C) during heat spells. In autumn the lake cools again, generally occupying the 60s–70s °F (16–25 °C) before winter sets in. Local weather, recent inflows, and water depth affect these values, so short‑term conditions can vary.
Swimming at Lake Whitney is permitted and is popular in warmer months, particularly in designated park and campground areas, but conditions require caution. There are no widespread, permanent public beaches with lifeguards at all sites, and boat traffic, submerged debris, changing water levels from dam operations, and occasional algal blooms or bacteria advisories can limit safe swimming. Cold winter temperatures also raise hypothermia risk. Visitors should check current park advisories, choose sheltered or marked swim spots, and use personal flotation devices or supervision as appropriate for safety.
