** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Oconee’s surface temperature changes notably through the year. In summer months the water commonly warms to roughly 75–90°F (24–32°C), with late heat sometimes pushing pockets into the low 90s (around 33°C). Spring typically brings a gentle rise from about 55–70°F (13–21°C) as inflows and air temperatures moderate, while autumn sees cooling from the 70s down into the 60s (around 16–24°C). Winter water temperatures often fall to roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C), colder near inlets and deeper areas. These seasonal ranges are typical for a large Piedmont reservoir and can vary locally with weather, depth and shade.
Swimming at Lake Oconee is generally permitted at many public and private shoreline locations because the lake is managed for recreation, including boating and water sports. However, swimmers should be cautious: there are few lifeguarded beaches, boat traffic can be heavy in summer, and sudden changes in depth and submerged hazards exist. Cold winter water presents a risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia, and brief advisories for algae or bacterial contamination can occur after heavy rains. For safe enjoyment, check local facility rules and current conditions, wear appropriate flotation devices when needed, and be mindful of boats and seasonal water quality notices.
