** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Hartwell, a large reservoir on the Georgia–South Carolina border, experiences substantial seasonal variation in surface water temperature. In summer the shallow bays and nearshore areas commonly warm to roughly 75–90°F (24–32°C), while open or deeper channels may be a few degrees cooler. Spring temperatures typically rise from about 50–70°F (10–21°C) as the lake responds to warming air, and autumn sees a gradual decline into the 55–75°F (13–24°C) range. In winter the surface can cool to roughly 35–50°F (2–10°C), especially after cold spells. Local factors such as depth, inflows, recent weather and wind can cause substantial short-term fluctuations and thermal layering in some parts of the reservoir.
Swimming at Lake Hartwell is generally permitted, but it is not a managed public swimming complex in most places, so designated beaches are limited and lifeguards are uncommon. People do swim recreationally—especially in summer when temperatures are comfortable—but boat traffic, sudden drop-offs, submerged structures and occasional water-quality advisories mean swimmers should choose supervised or clearly marked areas when available, use personal flotation devices where appropriate, and check local guidance before entering the water.
