*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Kournas (Λίμνη Κουρνά) is Crete’s only natural freshwater lake and, being relatively shallow, its temperature responds quickly to seasonal changes. In summer months (June–August) surface water typically warms to about 22–28 °C (72–82 °F), with the warmest periods sometimes reaching the upper part of that range. Late spring and early autumn (May, September) usually see temperatures around 18–24 °C (64–75 °F). In winter (December–February) the lake cools to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F), while early spring often falls between 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). These figures are approximate and can vary year to year depending on rainfall and air temperatures.
Swimming in Lake Kournas is generally permitted and popular in the warmer months because the freshwater and relatively calm conditions make it inviting for bathers. Local facilities and small beaches support recreational use, and some visitors also rent pedal boats, so swimmers should be mindful of craft and marked areas. In colder months swimming is uncommon due to low temperatures and local advisories may discourage it; additionally, observers should respect any posted signs or protected-area rules aimed at preserving the lake’s ecology. As with any natural site, checking current local guidance and water conditions before entering is recommended.
