Lake Keowee, a deep man-made reservoir in northwestern South Carolina, experiences noticeable seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. In winter the surface usually ranges from about 40–50°F (4–10°C). Spring sees a warming trend into roughly 50–70°F (10–21°C) as air temperatures rise. Summer surface temperatures commonly reach about 70–85°F (21–29°C) on warm days, while fall cools back to roughly 60–75°F (16–24°C). Because Keowee is relatively deep in places, bottom and mid‑depth waters remain markedly cooler than surface readings and a thermocline can develop in the warmer months, so temperatures vary with depth and weather.
Swimming is permitted on Lake Keowee but access and conditions vary: some public parks, marinas and private shorelines allow bathing and recreational swimming in designated spots, while other areas are restricted or primarily used for boating. Because much of the shoreline is residential and the lake is used for multiple purposes, swimmers should be aware of boat traffic, sudden depth changes and cooler subsurface water.
