** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Buchanan’s surface water temperature changes markedly through the year, reflecting Central Texas seasons and weather. In winter the lake typically cools to roughly 45–55°F (7–13°C) at the surface, spring warms into the mid 50s to low 70s°F (13–22°C), and summer surface temperatures commonly range from about 75–90°F (24–32°C) on warm, sunny days. In autumn the surface generally falls back into the 60s–70s°F (16–24°C). Deeper water remains cooler than the surface, and short-term swings depend on recent air temperature, rainfall, and reservoir level. Surface thermals can make shallow coves noticeably warmer than main-lake areas during calm weather.
Swimming at Lake Buchanan is permitted and is a popular recreational use because the reservoir and surrounding parks are managed for public access and water recreation. However, swimmers should use designated access points and exercise caution: many parks do not provide lifeguards, lake levels and submerged hazards can change, currents near spillways or the dam can be dangerous, and occasional algal blooms or debris can affect water quality. The best swimming comfort is usually in summer when surface temperatures reach the 70s–80s°F (mid 20s–low 30s°C), while cooler months may be too chilly for most casual swimmers.
