** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Barkley’s surface temperatures follow a familiar seasonal pattern for a large Tennessee reservoir. In winter months the surface typically cools to roughly 35–50°F (1–10°C), while spring brings a steady rise into the 50–70°F (10–21°C) range as the lake warms. Peak summer surface temperatures are commonly between 75–85°F (24–29°C), and in shallow coves and on calm, sunny days parts of the lake can reach the upper 80s°F (29–32°C). During autumn the water usually moderates again to roughly 60–75°F (15–24°C) as air temperatures decline. Deeper water remains colder year-round, so these figures are representative of near-surface conditions where swimming and boating occur.
Swimming at Lake Barkley is allowed at designated recreation areas and beaches, and many visitors swim from boats or shoreline access points, but it is governed by local rules and seasonal advisories. The lake is managed for multiple uses, so safety considerations—boat traffic, submerged hazards, variable depths and currents near dam structures—mean that swimming is encouraged only in appropriate, signed locations and when water-quality advisories (for example, algal blooms or runoff-related contamination) are not in effect. Observing posted signs, using life jackets, and checking current local advisories are sensible precautions before entering the water.
