** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Barkley’s surface temperature changes significantly through the year because it is a large, shallow reservoir. In winter months it often averages about 35–50°F (2–10°C) at the surface, with colder pockets near inlets and deeper channels. Spring warming typically brings surface readings into the range of 50–70°F (10–21°C) as air temperatures moderate. Summer is when the water is warmest, commonly reaching 70–85°F (21–29°C) and occasionally higher during heat waves; surface waters will be noticeably warmer than deeper sections. In autumn the lake cools back toward the 50–70°F (10–21°C) band as air temperatures fall. These are general seasonal ranges—actual conditions vary by depth, weather, and day-to-day sun and wind.
Swimming is permitted in many parts of Lake Barkley, particularly at designated public beaches and day-use areas maintained for recreation, because the reservoir is managed for multiple recreational uses. However, swimmers should be cautious: the lake sees boat traffic, has submerged hazards and variable currents near inlets and the dam, and water quality advisories can be issued after heavy rains. Lifeguards are not consistently provided at all sites, so using marked swimming areas, wearing personal flotation devices for weaker swimmers, and checking local advisories before entering the water is recommended.
