** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Altus–Lugert’s water temperature varies seasonally and by depth, and typical surface readings follow a predictable Oklahoma pattern. In spring (March–May) surface temperatures commonly range from about 50–68°F (10–20°C) as the lake warms after winter. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest water, often 75–85°F (24–29°C) on sunny afternoons. During fall (September–November) temperatures usually fall back to roughly 55–72°F (13–22°C). Winter surface temperatures commonly sit between about 40–55°F (4–13°C), though deeper water remains colder year-round. Weather, recent rainfall, wind, and inflows can shift these numbers, and early-morning or deep-water readings will be cooler than midday surface values.
Swimming is generally permitted at Lake Altus–Lugert in designated shore and park areas, such as those managed by Quartz Mountain State Park, but it is largely a swim-at-your-own-risk environment. There are often no lifeguards, and hazards include sudden depth changes, submerged structure, boat traffic and occasional algal or bacterial advisories that can close areas temporarily. Water below about 60°F (15–16°C) can feel uncomfortably cold for prolonged swimming, and exposure to water below roughly 50°F (10°C) increases the risk of hypothermia, so check current conditions, follow posted signage, and take precautions before entering.
