** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kirwin Reservoir in north-central Kansas experiences a wide seasonal range of water temperatures. In winter the surface often cools to near freezing, roughly 34–40°F (1–4°C), and pockets of the lake can ice over during sustained cold spells. Spring sees a steady rise as runoff and warming air lift temperatures into the mid‑40s to mid‑60s°F (7–18°C), while summer surface temperatures commonly reach the 70s and low 80s°F, about 21–28°C, occasionally peaking near 85°F (29°C) in heat waves. In autumn the water cools back through the 60s and 50s°F (15–11°C) as air temperatures drop. Deeper water stays colder year‑round, so overall thermal conditions can vary by location and depth.
Swimming at Kirwin is generally possible but limited by the site’s management and natural conditions. The reservoir and surrounding lands are managed primarily for wildlife and recreation rather than as a staffed beach, so there are no lifeguards and few formal swimming facilities; visitors swim at their own risk and should follow posted refuge rules and seasonal closures. Cold water, sudden drop‑offs, submerged vegetation, and boat traffic are common hazards, and ice in winter makes swimming unsafe. In summer months, when surface temperatures are warmest, many people do swim, but caution and local information are recommended before entering the water.
