** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Hillsdale Lake, a reservoir in eastern Kansas, experiences sizable seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In winter the surface commonly approaches freezing, roughly 32–44°F (0–7°C), especially after cold snaps, while spring warming typically moves temperatures into the mid-40s to upper-60s°F (7–20°C) as air and runoff warm the upper layers. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface readings often in the mid-70s to low 80s°F (24–28°C) on calm, sunny days, making the shallows most comfortable for swimming. In autumn the water cools again, generally falling through the 50s and 60s°F (10–20°C) as air temperatures decline; deeper parts of the reservoir retain cooler water year-round. Actual temperatures vary by depth, time of day and recent weather.
Swimming is permitted at Hillsdale Lake in designated recreation areas, and many visitors swim from beaches and boat-access points, but conditions and rules can change seasonally. Lifeguards are typically not provided at Corps-managed lake beaches, so swimming is effectively at one’s own risk. Water quality and safety can be affected by heavy rains, runoff and occasional algae, so swimmers should observe posted advisories and common-sense precautions such as avoiding swimming alone, staying within marked areas and being mindful of boat traffic and sudden depth changes.
