*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
El Capitan Reservoir (commonly called El Capitan Lake) in southern California typically exhibits seasonal surface temperatures that reflect the Mediterranean climate of the region. In winter the surface often falls into the low 50s to upper 50s °F (about 10–14 °C). Spring temperatures generally climb to roughly 55–68 °F (13–20 °C) as inflows warm. Peak summer surface readings commonly reach the upper 60s into the upper 70s °F (about 20–26 °C), especially in shallow, sun-exposed coves, while early fall usually holds moderate temperatures in the 60–72 °F range (16–22 °C). Because the reservoir stratifies, deeper water can remain much colder year-round, sometimes in the 40s–50s °F (4–15 °C), so actual exposure can be colder than surface values suggest.
Swimming in El Capitan Reservoir is generally not permitted for a combination of regulatory and safety reasons. The lake functions as a managed water supply and access rules aim to protect water quality; authorities also restrict direct-contact recreation to reduce contamination risks. Safety concerns—including sudden depth changes, cold deep water, submerged hazards and limited lifeguard presence—also factor into prohibitions or strong advisories against swimming. Boating and fishing are often allowed under specific rules, but anyone considering water activities should check current local regulations and conditions before visiting.
