** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The shallow, protected waters of East Harbor and nearby West Harbor on Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline follow the lake’s general seasonal pattern. Winter surface temperatures commonly sit just above freezing, about 32–40°F (0–4°C). In spring the water gradually warms to roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and runoff influences conditions. By mid to late summer, sheltered harbor areas can reach their warmest surface readings, often between about 65–78°F (18–26°C), with the warmest patches in shallow, sun-exposed embayments. Temperatures then decline through fall, typically falling to the 45–60°F range (7–16°C) before winter sets in. Local factors such as wind, currents, depth, and river inflows cause notable variation from one season to the next and between open-lake and harbor spots.
Swimming is permitted at designated beaches and swim areas when authorities report acceptable water quality and safe conditions, and many people swim there in mid to late summer when surface temperatures are most comfortable. Harbors themselves, however, are often less suitable for casual swimming because of boat traffic, changing depths, runoff and occasional water-quality issues such as elevated bacteria or harmful algal blooms; managers close swim areas when monitoring indicates a health risk. Always check current local advisories and posted signage before entering the water.
