** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Coos Bay itself is an estuarine harbor on the southern Oregon coast rather than a true lake, but water temperatures for the bay and nearby coastal lakes are generally cool year‑round. Surface temperatures typically sit in the mid‑40s to low‑50s °F (around 7–10 °C) in winter and rise to roughly the mid‑50s to mid‑60s °F (about 13–18 °C) in summer. Shallow inland ponds or small lakes in the Coos Bay area can warm further on hot summer days, sometimes reaching the upper 60s to around 70 °F (18–21 °C) in isolated spots, but deeper or tidally influenced waters remain substantially cooler.
Swimming is allowed in many public beaches and some designated freshwater sites, but conditions dictate whether it’s advisable. Cold temperatures limit safe immersion time and increase hypothermia risk, and the estuary has currents, tides and boat traffic that can make open‑water swimming hazardous. Local health or park authorities may post advisories for water quality after heavy rain or algal bloom concerns, so swimmers often choose summer days, protected areas, or use wetsuits and flotation for longer swims.
