*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Plymouth, a coastal city in southwest England, is bordered by the River Tamar, which forms the boundary between Devon and Cornwall before flowing into Plymouth Sound. The Tamar’s water temperature here is influenced by both freshwater from inland and the mild maritime climate of the English Channel. In winter, the river usually stays between 6 and 8°C (43–46°F), remaining cool and tidal. By spring, it gradually warms to around 10–13°C (50–55°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the water can reach 16–19°C (61–66°F), with surface temperatures occasionally higher in calm, sheltered areas. As autumn approaches, it cools again to about 11–13°C (52–55°F), maintaining a moderate warmth compared to most English rivers.
Swimming in the River Tamar near Plymouth is possible but generally best in designated or sheltered areas due to tidal flows and boat traffic. The estuary’s clean water and scenic setting attract open-water swimmers, kayakers, and paddleboarders during the summer months, though safety precautions are advised. For those preferring calmer conditions, nearby beaches and coves within Plymouth Sound provide ideal alternatives. The surrounding area also offers rich maritime attractions, including the historic Royal William Yard, Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, and panoramic waterfront views along the South West Coast Path.
