The temperature does not cause significant discomfort, and swimming will be pleasant for the majority. However, it's important to remember that prolonged exposure to the water can still lead to cooling, so it's essential to monitor the time spent in the water, especially for children or elderly people. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. ** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
In the Grande Porto area, natural standing waters such as small urban lakes and sheltered river sections along the Douro present modestly cool temperatures compared with nearby Atlantic beaches. Typical seasonal surface temperatures for lakes and calm river stretches run roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in winter and spring, 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in summer, and back toward 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) in autumn. During heat waves shallow lagoons or sheltered pockets can rise toward the mid-20s °C (around 75–78 °F), but deeper or flowing parts of the Douro stay noticeably cooler. Water temperature varies with depth, river flow, recent rainfall and local sheltering from wind.
Swimming opportunities depend on location and regulation. Many small park lakes in Greater Porto formally prohibit bathing for safety and water-quality reasons, while some calmer Douro embayments and managed inland reservoirs permit swimming where signage, water-quality monitoring and lifeguards are present. In central Porto swimming in the Douro near quays is generally discouraged because of currents, boat traffic and pollution risks, so most residents use monitored beaches on the coast or organized inland sites in summer when conditions and official permissions make bathing safe. Always check local signage and recent water-quality information before entering.
