Oberhausen, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is found on the banks of the Emscher River. The Emscher was traditionally a small and relatively insignificant river until the rapid expansion of the Ruhr industrial area in the 19th century. At that time, it was adjusted to work as a primary and large-scale sewage canal, which is why it often isn't a typical river for swimming.
As for the water temperature of the Emscher River, it varies throughout the year. It can get quite cold during the winter months, falling to around 4-6 degrees Celsius. In the summer, a significant increase is seen, and the temperature can reach 18-20 degrees Celsius, which feels quite cool compared to typical swimming temperatures. Despite these temperatures, please be aware that swimming in this river is generally not recommended due to its troubled history and ongoing challenges with pollution. The Emscher River, unfortunately, has suffered from severe pollution due to industrial waste and sewage, although efforts are underway to clean it up and restore it to a natural state.
