Water Temperature Trends
North Rhine-Westphalia, located in western Germany, is home to numerous rivers and lakes, including the Rhine, Ruhr, and Weser rivers, as well as popular lakes such as the Biggesee and Baldeneysee. Due to the region’s moderate climate, water temperatures fluctuate throughout the year. In winter, most rivers and lakes drop to around 2–6°C (36–43°F), making swimming impractical for most people. As spring arrives, water temperatures gradually rise, reaching about 10–15°C (50–59°F) by May, making early-season swimming possible for those comfortable with cooler water.
During the summer, from June to August, many lakes in North Rhine-Westphalia reach pleasant swimming temperatures of 18–24°C (64–75°F), depending on depth and weather conditions. Larger lakes, such as the Biggesee and Möhnesee, typically warm up to around 20–22°C (68–72°F) during the hottest months, while smaller, shallower lakes can sometimes exceed 25°C (77°F) on particularly warm days. Rivers like the Rhine and Ruhr remain cooler due to continuous water flow, usually staying between 16–20°C (61–68°F) in summer, but certain calm sections may become warm enough for swimming.
As autumn approaches, temperatures gradually decline, dropping below 15°C (59°F) by mid-October. While organized outdoor swimming areas close as the weather cools, some people continue swimming in the lakes well into the colder months. The best time for comfortable swimming in North Rhine-Westphalia is from June to early September, when water temperatures are at their highest and conditions are ideal for outdoor water activities.
