** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Rio Caia, a tributary in the Portalegre District of eastern Portugal that feeds into the Caia reservoir, has water temperatures that vary notably with the seasons. In winter the river and reservoir typically cool to about 8–13 °C (46–55 °F). Spring temperatures rise to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) as air temperatures warm and flow increases. In summer, when recreational use is most common, surface water often reaches 20–26 °C (68–79 °F) in sheltered stretches and the reservoir, though deeper or faster-flowing sections remain cooler. Autumn sees a gradual decline, with temperatures generally between 14–20 °C (57–68 °F) depending on recent weather.
Swimming in the Rio Caia area is possible in many places, especially in calmer, shallower parts of the river and around the Caia reservoir during the warmer months, but it is not uniformly unrestricted. Local regulations, water-quality conditions, seasonal fluctuations in reservoir levels, submerged obstacles and occasional strong currents or algal growth can make particular spots unsafe or prohibited. Visitors should follow posted signage, respect private property and municipal rules, and consider that water in rivers and reservoirs is often colder and less predictable than coastal sea temperatures.
