** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Rio Alcoa (Portuguese: Rio Alcoa) in the Leiria district typically shows a marked seasonal variation in water temperature, reflecting local climate and river size. In winter months the water often ranges from about 8–12 °C (46–54 °F), feeling quite cold for bathing. Spring temperatures usually rise to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F) as daylight and rainfall patterns change. In summer, especially in shallower, slower-flowing stretches, surface temperatures can reach approximately 18–25 °C (64–77 °F), making the river more comfortable for short swims on warm days. During autumn the water cools again to around 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) as air temperatures drop and runoff increases. Local microclimates, depth, shading from vegetation and recent rainfall can shift these ranges up or down by a few degrees.
Swimming in Rio Alcoa is commonly possible in accessible, calm sections where depth and current are suitable, but it is not universally permitted everywhere along the course. Local rules, private property, water quality and safety conditions determine whether bathing is advisable: agricultural runoff, occasional discharges and variable currents can affect suitability. Visitors should check current water quality reports or signage, choose safe entry points with gentle slopes, and be cautious of submerged rocks and sudden depth changes. Lifeguards are generally not present, so swimming with companions and local knowledge is recommended.
