The Río Segura, which crosses parts of the Valencian Community, shows marked seasonal variation in water temperature influenced by flow, depth and local climate. In winter surface temperatures commonly sit between about 8 and 14 °C (46–57 °F), while spring typically warms to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). Summer temperatures in shallow, slow-moving stretches and reservoirs can reach 18–26 °C (64–79 °F), and during heat waves some isolated pools may climb toward 28 °C (82 °F). Autumn usually sees a gradual cooling with temperatures near 15–22 °C (59–72 °F). These figures are approximate and vary significantly between upstream mountainous reaches, deeper reservoirs, and urban lowland sections where water can warm faster or remain cooler depending on release schedules from dams.
Swimming opportunities on the Segura depend on location and local rules rather than a single blanket policy. Designated bathing areas and some reservoirs or natural pools are commonly used for swimming when water quality checks are favorable, but many urban stretches are discouraged or formally restricted because of contamination risks from agricultural runoff, treated effluents and low flows, as well as hazards like currents, submerged debris and fluctuating depths.
