*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Munster Blackwater River flows westward across Ireland, and its water temperature, like other Irish rivers, is cold for much of the year, providing an invigorating experience for those who choose to swim. During the colder seasons, water temperatures typically hover between 5∘C and 10∘C (41∘F to 50∘F). In the height of summer, the river warms up, reaching a comfortable range of 16∘C to 19∘C (61∘F to 66∘F), depending on the stretch and recent weather.
Wild swimming is a popular activity in many locations along the Blackwater, and it is generally tolerated, provided swimmers exercise caution and respect for the environment. Towns like Fermoy even host organized events, such as the annual Martin Duggan Memorial Swim, highlighting the river’s suitability for swimming in certain areas. However, swimmers should be mindful of water quality, especially after heavy rain, and the strong currents that can exist, particularly in the lower tidal reaches near Youghal. Beyond swimming, the river valley is a hub for tourism, with attractions like the magnificent Lismore Castle and the scenic Blackwater Valley Scenic Drive.
