The Khorol is a mid-sized river in Ukraine and a tributary of the Psel, flowing across Sumy and Poltava regions. Over the course of the year its water temperature shifts significantly with the seasons. In winter, parts of the river freeze or near-freeze, and water temperatures can approach the freezing point in shallow zones. As spring progresses and meltwater feeds the stream, temperatures climb, but often remain cool—many sections stay in the +5 to +12 °C range through early spring.
In summer, particularly in July and August, the Khorol warms up noticeably. In favorable spots (shallow, sunlit, slow flow) temperatures in some years have reached the low 20s °C (around +20 to +23 °C), making swimming more comfortable. Yet even then, in deeper or faster stretches, water can feel cooler and may limit how long a person wants to stay in. By autumn the cooling resumes: September might still offer moderate water, but by late October the river becomes too cold again for prolonged bathing. In general, safe and comfortable swimming in the Khorol is most feasible during a window of summer months, when air and water temperatures align.
