The Río Genil, born in the Sierra Nevada and flowing across Andalusia, shows clear seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter the river commonly ranges from about 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) in higher and mountain-fed stretches, rising to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) in lower valleys during spring. By summer, calmer reaches and reservoirized sections can warm to around 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), occasionally reaching 25–26 °C (77–79 °F) in isolated, shallow pools. In autumn temperatures typically fall back to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) as flow increases and air temperatures decline. Local conditions such as altitude, shading, recent rainfall and upstream releases from dams strongly affect these values, so exact temperatures vary from place to place and year to year.
Swimming in the Río Genil is possible in many locations, particularly in slower, wider sections and reservoirs where depths and currents are manageable, but it is not universally permitted or safe everywhere. Municipalities sometimes designate specific bathing areas where water quality and hazards are monitored; elsewhere swimming may be discouraged or prohibited due to strong currents, sudden changes in flow from irrigation releases, submerged obstacles, or poor water quality after agricultural runoff.
