The Achelous (Greek: Αχελώος), flowing through Epirus from the Pindus mountains toward the Ionian plain, shows marked seasonal and local variation in water temperature. In winter the river is cold, commonly around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) in upland reaches fed by snowmelt; spring temperatures rise to roughly 6–14 °C (43–57 °F) as flows moderate. In summer lowland and sun-exposed pools typically warm to about 16–24 °C (61–75 °F), and on hot, shallow reaches temperatures can locally approach 26–27 °C (79–81 °F). Autumn cooling brings temperatures back toward roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F). Microclimates created by deep gorges, shaded canyons, or cold springs mean that temperatures can vary substantially over short distances.
Swimming is commonly possible in many accessible stretches of the Achelous, especially in calm bends and natural pools during summer, but it is not uniformly advisable everywhere. Local restrictions occasionally limit access near infrastructure or protected habitats, and strong currents, cold underflows, sudden depth changes and rising flows after rain pose safety risks. Water quality in rural Epirus is often good, yet swimmers should choose sheltered, frequently used spots, be aware of seasonal cold shock in shoulder seasons, and follow local guidance for safe swimming.
