** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Piute Reservoir’s water remains relatively cool through much of the year because it is a high-elevation impoundment fed by mountain runoff. Seasonal surface temperatures typically run about 40–55°F (4–13°C) in spring (April–June) as snowmelt keeps the water cold, warm to roughly 60–70°F (16–21°C) in the core summer months (July–September) when air temperatures are highest, fall temperatures commonly fall back to roughly 45–60°F (7–15°C) in October–November, and winter often sees surface readings near freezing, around 32–40°F (0–4°C), with portions of the reservoir subject to ice. Because of depth, wind and inflows, actual temperatures can vary locally and with weather, and thermoclines can make deeper water much colder than the surface.
Swimming is generally permitted in public-use areas of Piute Reservoir since it is managed for multiple recreational activities, but conditions often make it less inviting and potentially hazardous. Cold water immersion, sudden drop-offs, underwater obstacles, and boat traffic are common concerns, so swimmers should be cautious, use flotation, avoid solo swimming, and heed posted signs or closures. The warmest and most comfortable time for swimming is late July through August, while spring and fall are more suitable for brief dips rather than prolonged swimming.
