Medard Lake, a large artificial lake created on the site of a former coal mine near Sokolov, has quickly become known as one of the most striking bodies of water in western Bohemia. Because of its considerable size and depth, the water warms more slowly than in smaller ponds. In June, temperatures are often around 17–19 °C, and by July and August they usually reach 21–23 °C, with warmer spells pushing the surface water slightly higher. Despite this, the lake tends to keep a fresh, clear character thanks to its depth and open setting.
Swimming at Medard is officially allowed only in certain parts, as the lake is still being gradually developed for recreation. Where access is possible, the broad shoreline and clean water make it attractive for summer bathing. The feeling here is different from traditional Czech ponds — the wide expanse of water and open horizons give it a more coastal atmosphere. For visitors who enjoy a refreshing swim in a modern and spacious environment, Medard offers a unique alternative to the smaller, warmer lakes of the region.
