Mayfield Lake, a reservoir on the Cowlitz River in southwestern Washington, typically runs cool for much of the year. Winter surface temperatures often sit in the mid-30s to mid-40s °F (about 1–7 °C). Spring brings gradual warming to roughly 45–60 °F (7–16 °C). The warmest period is usually midsummer, when sheltered surface areas can reach the mid-60s to low 70s °F (about 18–22 °C) on hot, sunny days. As fall progresses the water commonly drops back into the 50s °F (10–15 °C). These are general seasonal ranges; local conditions, depth, weather and dam releases can cause considerable short-term variation.
Swimming is generally possible at Mayfield Lake and people do swim there, particularly in late July and August when surface temperatures are highest. However, it is not the warmest swimming destination; even in summer the water can feel brisk, and sudden cold currents from deeper water or dam operations are a hazard.
