** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Wanahoo’s water temperatures follow a typical Midwestern reservoir pattern. In winter months the surface is close to freezing, roughly 32–41°F (0–5°C). Spring warming brings temperatures into the 40–60°F (4–15°C) range as runoff and air temperatures rise. By summer the lake commonly reaches the most comfortable levels for recreational bathing, with surface temperatures often between about 68–82°F (20–28°C) and occasionally higher on hot, calm days. In autumn the water cools again, generally falling through the 50–65°F (10–18°C) band as air temperatures drop. Local conditions such as depth, wind, and recent weather can cause significant day-to-day variation, and shallow bays warm faster than deeper parts of the reservoir.
Swimming is permitted at Lake Wanahoo as part of its recreational use, but it is most practical and safe during the warm summer months when surface temperatures are in the comfortable range. Because the lake is a multipurpose reservoir, visitors should observe posted rules, designated swimming zones, and any advisories issued by local managers; colder water in spring and fall presents a real risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia, and boating activity or changing currents can affect safety. Checking current conditions before entering the water is recommended.
