** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Macatawa’s surface water temperatures follow the seasonal pattern typical of shallow, inland lakes in western Michigan. In winter the lake often sits at or near freezing, with surface temperatures around 28–34°F (−2 to 1°C) and occasional shore ice. Spring warms more slowly, with April–May readings commonly in the 40–60°F range (4–15°C) depending on winds and sunshine. Summer brings the warmest conditions: July and August surface temperatures frequently range from roughly 65–78°F (18–26°C) in open and sheltered areas, with the warmest readings in shallow bays and near shore. By autumn the water cools again, often falling to about 50–60°F (10–16°C) in early fall and dropping further as winter approaches.
Swimming is generally allowed on Lake Macatawa and at nearby public beaches and parks, but whether it is advisable depends on season and conditions. Summer temperatures make swimming comfortable for most people, while spring and fall can present cold-water risks and shorter tolerance times. Water quality can vary after heavy rains or during algal events, so local advisories and posted signs should be checked before entering. In winter the lake is usually too cold and may be iced over, so open‑water swimming is not recommended except under supervised, specially prepared circumstances.
