** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Allegan, a reservoir on the Kalamazoo River in western Michigan, follows the seasonal temperature patterns typical of inland Midwestern lakes. In winter the surface nears freezing, around 32°F (0°C), and can remain ice-covered for weeks. Spring sees a gradual rise, roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as the water mixes and stratification begins. Peak summer surface temperatures often reach about 68–80°F (20–27°C) on warm days, with shallow bays and sheltered areas sometimes warming to the upper 70s/low 80s°F (25–28°C). By autumn the surface cools back into the 50–65°F range (10–18°C) as fall turnover brings cooler water to the top. Deeper parts of the reservoir remain cooler year-round, so temperatures vary by depth, location, and recent weather.
Swimming on Lake Allegan is generally possible but typically permitted only in designated public access areas and beaches rather than everywhere along the shoreline. Local parks and access points allow swimming because they offer safer entry, monitoring of water quality, and separation from boating lanes; however, conditions near the dam, boat launches, and marinas can be hazardous and are often restricted for safety. Occasional advisories for blue‑green algae or other contamination can temporarily prohibit swimming, so checking local signage and recent water‑quality reports before entering is recommended.
