** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Anna’s surface water temperatures vary with the seasons and with depth. In winter the lake commonly chills to roughly 34–45°F (1–7°C) at the surface. Spring brings a steady warm-up, with typical surface readings from about 50–70°F (10–21°C) as the upper layers mix and sunlight increases. In summer the top layer often reaches the most comfortable swimming range, commonly around 70–85°F (21–29°C), although nearshore areas warmed by sun or shallow bays can feel slightly warmer. As fall progresses the surface cools back toward the 50–72°F (10–22°C) range. Deeper water remains markedly cooler year-round, because the lake stratifies in warm months and bottom layers can be much colder than surface temperatures.
Swimming at Lake Anna is permitted in many locations and is a popular summer activity; Virginia state parks, public beaches, and private waterfront properties maintain designated swimming areas. The lake is managed for recreation as well as other uses, so rules exist to protect swimmers and boats; people should use marked swim zones, heed posted advisories, and be cautious of boat traffic, drop-offs and colder pockets of water. Some shorelines near the power plant’s discharge channels may be warmer or have access restrictions, and occasional algal-bloom advisories can temporarily limit swimming, so checking local information before entering the water is wise.
