** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Aquia Creek’s waters in northern Virginia experience the full range of mid-Atlantic seasonal temperatures. In winter the creek often drops into the mid-30s to low-50s °F (about 2–11 °C), while spring typically warms toward the upper 40s to mid-60s °F (9–18 °C). Summer surface temperatures commonly reach the low 70s to mid-80s °F (21–30 °C) on warm, calm days, and early fall usually sees a gradual decline back into the 50s and 60s °F (10–20 °C). Conditions can vary locally with tides, shading, depth and freshwater inflow; shallow, sheltered coves warm faster than deeper or tidal sections. Short-term spikes above typical summer values can occur during heat waves, and seasonal cold snaps can lower temperatures quickly.
Swimming in Aquia Creek is possible in some areas but not uniformly encouraged everywhere. Designated or private beaches and calm coves are commonly used for swimming, yet many stretches have boat traffic, strong tidal currents, submerged debris and variable water quality that can make open swimming risky. Local rules and private community restrictions may govern access; there are few lifeguarded public swimming sites directly on the creek. Swimmers should check current water conditions, heed signage, and favor monitored or sheltered spots to reduce hazards associated with tides, boats and contamination.
