Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Horseshoe Reservoir, located northeast of Phoenix on the Verde River, lies in a rugged desert canyon surrounded by the Mazatzal Mountains. The lake’s water temperature reflects both the desert climate and its river-fed nature, resulting in noticeable seasonal variation. During winter, surface temperatures usually range from 50 to 58°F (10–14°C), remaining cool due to mountain runoff. In spring, the reservoir warms quickly as desert air temperatures rise, reaching 65–75°F (18–24°C) by May. During summer, Horseshoe Reservoir experiences its warmest conditions, with surface waters typically between 80 and 86°F (27–30°C) in July and August. By autumn, the water cools again to about 65–72°F (18–22°C), staying comfortable for outdoor recreation until late October before dropping toward winter levels.
Swimming is permitted at Horseshoe Reservoir, though it is less developed for recreation than nearby Bartlett Lake. The warm summer water and scenic desert backdrop make it suitable for informal swimming and cooling off during hot days, but there are no designated beaches or lifeguarded areas. Because the reservoir’s water levels can fluctuate significantly due to its role in water storage and flood control, visitors should be cautious near steep banks and changing shorelines. Despite its remote setting, Horseshoe Reservoir provides a peaceful and natural environment for swimming and outdoor enjoyment.
