** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Herrington Lake in central Kentucky is a large reservoir whose surface water temperatures vary with the seasons and depth. In winter the lake often hovers around 35–45°F (2–7°C) at the surface, while spring sees a steady rise into roughly 50–70°F (10–21°C) as the upper layers warm. Peak summer surface temperatures commonly reach about 75–85°F (24–29°C), making the shallows comfortable for swimming, and fall brings a gradual cooling to roughly 55–70°F (13–21°C). Because Herrington is fairly deep in places, temperatures below the thermocline can be substantially colder than surface readings, so water just a few feet down may remain brisk even in summer.
Swimming at Herrington Lake is generally permitted in many areas and is a routine recreational activity from marinas, resorts and private docks, but there are no universally maintained public beaches with lifeguards across the entire lake. Local rules, private property lines and posted restrictions apply, and certain zones near the dam, intake structures or heavy boat lanes are off-limits for safety. Swimmers should be aware of hazards such as boat traffic, submerged obstacles, sudden drop-offs and variable water quality after heavy rains, and should check local signage and advisories before entering the water.
