** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Fishtrap Lake, a Corps-managed reservoir in eastern Kentucky, experiences typical temperate-lake seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In winter the surface can drop to roughly 34–45°F (1–7°C), often staying cold enough to discourage prolonged exposure. Spring warms the lake into the mid ranges, about 45–65°F (7–18°C), with late spring and early summer showing more comfortable conditions. Peak surface temperatures generally occur in July and August, commonly reaching around 70–80°F (21–27°C) on warm afternoons, though localized variations and cool inflows can lower temperatures. By fall the surface cools back toward roughly 50–70°F (10–21°C). Deeper water layers remain noticeably cooler year-round because of stratification, so water feels cooler below the thermocline even in summer.
Swimming at Fishtrap Lake is not centered on a staffed, lifeguarded beach the way some parks provide; the reservoir is primarily managed for flood control, water storage, and general recreation, so swimming typically occurs from designated recreation areas, shorelines, or boats rather than in a supervised swimming complex. Because there are no widespread formal lifeguards and because of boat traffic, submerged structures, and sudden depth changes, visitors swim at their own risk; those who choose to enter the water are advised to use caution, life jackets, and follow posted rules at recreation sites.
