** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Chatcolet Lake, located in Idaho’s Heyburn State Park, experiences noticeable seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. In spring the lake commonly runs cool, roughly 45–60°F (7–16°C) as snowmelt and cold rains keep waters low. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with typical surface temperatures around 65–75°F (18–24°C) on calm, sunny days, though exact values depend on air temperature and wind. By autumn the water cools back to about 50–62°F (10–17°C) as evenings shorten, and in winter the lake often sits near freezing — roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C) — with portions subject to ice cover. These are surface ranges; deeper water and inflows can be colder and temperatures vary year to year.
Swimming at Chatcolet is generally permitted because it is a recreational lake within Heyburn State Park and there are developed access points and beaches intended for public use. That said, many visitors find comfortable swimming mainly in the warmest summer weeks; outside that window the cold water increases the risk of cold shock and hypothermia. Local advisories, algae warnings, ice conditions in winter, boat traffic and lack of lifeguards can also affect whether it is sensible to enter the water, so swimmers should judge conditions and follow park guidance.
