** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Borden Lake’s water temperatures generally follow the seasonal pattern seen in small lakes across Minnesota. In summer, surface temperatures commonly warm to roughly 65–80°F (18–27°C), with shallower bays and calm afternoons pushing toward the higher end. During late spring and early summer, and again in early fall, the lake is often in the 50–65°F (10–18°C) range as it stratifies and then mixes. In the shoulder seasons, spring and fall, temperatures will commonly sit between about 40–60°F (4–15°C) depending on recent weather. In winter the surface freezes at about 32°F (0°C) and under ice the water column stabilizes near 34–39°F (1–4°C), with the coldest conditions occurring at the shoreline and in shallow areas.
Swimming at Borden Lake is feasible during the ice‑free months and is commonly practiced from late spring through early fall, when surface temperatures are warm enough for comfortable recreational swimming. Local access points and any designated beaches determine where people enter the water; winter swimming is not typical except for organized ice‑swimming with proper safety measures. Regardless of season, water quality advisories, shoreline conditions, water temperature, and the risk of cold shock or hypothermia should guide decisions about swimming, and caution is advised when temperatures are below comfortable ranges.
