** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Blue Mesa Reservoir, high in Colorado’s Gunnison Basin, tends to have relatively cold water year-round because it is deep, fed by mountain snowmelt, and sits at high elevation. Surface temperatures in summer typically reach the mid-50s to upper-60s °F (about 13–20 °C) on warm afternoons, though they can be cooler early or late in the season. In spring and fall, surface readings commonly fall in the 40s to mid-50s °F (4–13 °C). Winter conditions often bring near-freezing water at the surface, roughly 32–40 °F (0–4 °C), and some sheltered bays may develop ice; deeper water remains substantially colder throughout the year.
Swimming is permitted at Blue Mesa in designated shoreline and beach areas during the warmer months, and the state park maintains access points for swimmers. However, the cold water temperatures, sudden drop-offs and variable currents mean swimmers face real hypothermia and safety risks even in summer, so many visitors wear wetsuits or limit time in the water. There are generally no lifeguards at most spots, so responsible precautions—checking conditions, staying close to shore, and using flotation—are advised when entering the reservoir.
