*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Barkhamsted Reservoir typically runs cold for much of the year because it is a deep, forested drinking-water impoundment. Surface temperatures in winter hover near freezing, roughly 32–39°F (0–4°C). In spring the water slowly warms into the 40s and lower 50s, about 4–12°C, while summer surface temperatures commonly reach the mid‑60s to mid‑70s, roughly 16–24°C, occasionally edging into the upper 70s (24–26°C) during heat waves. Because the reservoir is deep and stratified, deeper water remains much colder year‑round — often in the 40s–50s°F (4–10°C) even when the surface is warm — so temperature can change quickly with depth or in shaded coves.
Swimming at Barkhamsted Reservoir is not permitted. The reservoir is managed primarily as a public drinking‑water source, and prohibitions are in place to protect water quality and public health. In addition to water‑quality concerns, there are safety issues: limited shoreline access, steep drop‑offs, cold deep water that increases hypothermia risk, and no lifeguards or designated beach facilities. For those seeking open‑water swimming in the region, nearby lakes and designated public beaches with lifeguards and water‑quality monitoring are better options.
