The River Ribble as it flows through the city of Preston, Lancashire, offers a cold, natural water experience. Its seasonal water temperature varies dramatically. During the winter months, the river is frigid, with temperatures typically ranging from a chilling 3∘C to 7∘C (37∘F to 45∘F). Even in the height of summer, the temperature rarely exceeds 16∘C to 20∘C (61∘F to 68∘F).
Swimming in the River Ribble near Preston is generally strongly discouraged and often prohibited by local authorities. The river presents serious dangers, including powerful, hidden currents, deep water, and underwater debris which pose a risk of drowning or injury.
