*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Widnes, a town in Cheshire, lies on the northern bank of the River Mersey, where the river begins to open into its broad estuary toward Liverpool Bay. The Mersey here is strongly influenced by tides and the region’s mild maritime climate. In winter, the water typically remains between 5 and 7°C (41–45°F), staying cold and brackish. By spring, it gradually warms to around 9–11°C (48–52°F). During midsummer—particularly in July and August—the surface temperature can reach 16–18°C (61–64°F), though tidal mixing often keeps it a few degrees cooler. As autumn approaches, the river cools again to about 10–12°C (50–54°F), maintaining a stable but fresh feel through most of the year.
Swimming in the River Mersey at Widnes is not generally recommended because of strong tidal currents, boat traffic, and limited visibility. The estuarine flow can change quickly, making it unsuitable for casual swimmers. However, organized open-water events are occasionally held under controlled conditions in calmer parts of the river. Most residents enjoy the Mersey from its walking and cycling paths, which offer wide views across the estuary. Nearby attractions include Spike Island, the Silver Jubilee Bridge, and the Wigg Island Nature Reserve, all of which highlight the area’s mix of natural beauty and industrial heritage.
