*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Gillingham, a coastal town in Kent, sits on the broad, tidal stretch of the River Medway, close to where the river flows into the Thames Estuary. The water here is influenced by both freshwater from upstream and saltwater from the North Sea, which gives it a distinctive maritime character. In winter, the Medway around Gillingham usually remains between 5 and 7°C (41–45°F), staying cold and brackish. By spring, it warms to around 9–12°C (48–54°F), and during midsummer—particularly in July and August—the water can reach 17–19°C (63–66°F) on warm days, though tidal movement often keeps it a few degrees cooler. As autumn arrives, the temperature gradually drops again to about 11–13°C (52–55°F), maintaining a fresh, coastal feel through much of the year.
Swimming in the River Medway at Gillingham is not generally advised because of strong tides, mudflats, and busy boat traffic. The tidal conditions can change quickly, making the water unpredictable for casual swimmers. However, wild swimming is possible in calmer areas farther upstream, where the flow is slower and the water quality is higher. For those who prefer to stay onshore, Gillingham offers riverside parks, marinas, and nearby attractions such as The Strand Leisure Park, Fort Amherst, and the historic Chatham Dockyard.
