** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

The River Thames in London, particularly the central tidal section, experiences a significant seasonal variation in water temperature. In the coldest months of winter, the temperature generally drops to approximately 6 to 10∘C (43 to 50∘F), while during the summer, it warms up to a peak of around 18 to 22∘C (64 to 72∘F), a range similar to many coastal areas. Even in summer, the deep water and rapid flow maintain a consistent chill.

Swimming in the tidal Thames through central London is strictly prohibited by the Port of London Authority due to significant dangers. These hazards include extremely strong, fast-flowing tides, the risk of cold water shock even in warmer weather, heavy commercial and recreational boat traffic, and the presence of sewage overflow after heavy rainfall. However, upstream of Putney Bridge, swimming is technically permitted outside of the main navigation channel, but still discouraged due to the risks. Visitors can enjoy countless other riverside attractions, such as the Tower of London, the London Eye, and the Tate Modern art gallery.
