*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Valença, in the Viana do Castelo district, lies on the banks of the Minho River and is surrounded by freshwater bodies and small reservoirs rather than large natural lakes. Water temperatures in these inland freshwater areas follow a typical Atlantic-influenced northern Portugal pattern: winter temperatures commonly range from about 8–12 °C (46–54 °F), spring from roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F), summer from about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), and autumn from around 14–20 °C (57–68 °F). Local conditions such as depth, shading, recent rainfall and river flow can cause variations from these averages, so actual readings at any spot may differ by several degrees.
Swimming is possible in parts of the Minho River and in nearby reservoirs during the warmer months, but whether it is officially allowed depends on local signage and water-quality monitoring. Authorities periodically assess bacterial levels and issue advisories; strong currents, submerged hazards and boat traffic also affect safety. Therefore bathing is typically permitted only in designated or commonly used spots when water quality and conditions meet public-health and safety standards. Visitors should check local notices and exercise caution, especially outside summer when temperatures are lower and conditions can be more hazardous.
