Terni’s closest lake, Lago di Piediluco, sits in the Umbrian hills and is the main local spot for open-water recreation. Surface temperatures vary with the seasons: in spring (April–May) waters typically range from about 10–18 °C (50–64 °F), in summer (June–August) they warm to roughly 20–26 °C (68–79 °F), in autumn (September–October) they cool to around 12–20 °C (54–68 °F), and in winter (November–March) temperatures commonly fall to about 4–10 °C (39–50 °F). These figures are approximate and can change with weather, recent rainfall and depth, as deeper parts remain noticeably colder than the shallows.
Swimming is generally allowed in designated areas of Lago di Piediluco and is popular in the warmer months because of the lake’s accessible shoreline and relatively calm water.
